U.S. Coast Requirements for Masters License
YOU MUST HAVE A OUPV LICENSE OR OUPV COURSE COMPLETION CERTIFICATE TO TAKE THE MASTERS COURSE
Knowledge
The Master Mariner license requires an additional 60-question exam (minimum passing score of 70%) covering advanced subjects.
Experience
The experience questions are answered by USCG sea service forms you complete and submit with your license application. Both the OUPV and the Master Mariner licenses require a minimum of 360 days of boating experience -- 90 days of which must have been obtained within the past three years. The near coastal waters endorsement for the OUPV requires a minimum of 90 days off-shore. This 90 day requirement is NOT restricted to the last three years. The near coastal waters endorsement for the Master Mariner license requires a minimum of 720 days total experience with 360 days of it off-shore. We provide the required forms and assist you with their proper completion.
Health
You prove satisfactory health by taking a complete physical administered by a MD of your choice. We will provide the required US Coast Guard forms for your physician to complete. During class, we will emphasize those mistakes most commonly made when filling out the forms to allow you to avoid those pitfalls.
Citizenship
Good citizenship is demonstrated by the successful completion of a drug test, a criminal background check conducted by the USCG, and the submission of either a passport or original birth certificate and your social security card.
You must also have current First Aid and CPR certifications. Both must have been issued within the last 12 months. If you need to renew your certifications, we have an American Red Cross First Aid and CPR instructor on staff who can provide you with the required refresher training at a small additional charge.
